Henry Long 2025 Class-Elected Commencement Speech

In my free time, I love listening to music, watching slime videos on Instagram, or taking ill-timed 0.5x photos of my best buds. I love hosting and meeting new people so feel free to stop by! I am so excited to meet so many new people during my time as an RA, and hopefully make some really fun Appleby traditions! I am an international student from England so community is really important to me! ” was a common sentiment from students, many of whom are planning to work in government agencies, the foreign service, or IR-related fields, and were disheartened by what Trump’s win means for U.S. foreign policy.

Henry Long 2025 Class-Elected Commencement Speech

  • I am looking forward to an amazing year on campus!
  • My campaign values are community and accountability.
  • I believe that Donald Trump lacks the character to be president and that his victory will severely harm America’s civic culture and international reputation.
  • The CMC community must re-commit itself to constructive dialogue.

The class of 2025 elected Henry Long to deliver remarks on their behalf at Claremont McKenna College’s 77th Commencement Ceremony on May 17th, 2025. On campus, I am part of the Claremont Consulting Group and Claremont Accounting Association. Hey everyone, my name is Rakhshaan Adamjee, and I am super excited to be one of the RAs for student apartments! I am looking forward to an amazing year on campus! I am excited to meet and talk with everyone more!

U.S. Foreign Policy Outlook After the 2024 Election

CMC students deem the new data science major as “very admirable and a necessary step for CMC to remain a leading national liberal arts college,” according to David Roman ‘22, a current public policy major with a data science sequence. “Teaching a data science course like Econ 160 involves a lot more in-class lab work, where professors present a lecture and students operate software in class,” said Batta in response to the differences between teaching a traditional accounting course and Accounting Data Analytics. While the data science major is intended to make students experts in that realm, CMC will continue to offer the data science sequence but plans to change its name to distinguish it from the major. However, the sequence offers students familiarity with data science.” In other words, CMC intends the sequence to be interdisciplinary, as students must also complete a major. The data science major will prepare students for a data-driven world with machine intelligence.”

Ideally, students majoring in data science and computer science will participate together in clinic projects during their junior year. Many CMC students were hoping that the data science major would provide more access to computer science courses, which have become increasingly difficult to enroll in at Harvey Mudd College. “The data science major will allow students to be a player, an expert in data science,” said Peter Uvin, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, to stress the distinctive purposes the data science major would serve. I truly love giving back to the community that has shaped so much of my early young adult life and hope to be both a guide and a friend to incoming and returning students here on campus.

Bill Kristol Says He Would Vote For Zohran Mamdani for New York City Mayor

If working and middle class voters cannot afford groceries, they certainly cannot afford to be single issue voters for social justice. Though the person later sincerely apologized, this episode reflects a broader problem with political discourse in the CMC community. “Perhaps racism and sexism played a role for some voters,” our professor responded.

Outside of basketball, I love hanging out with friends, playing video games and board games, and spending time outdoors. Basketball is a passion of mine, and I love watching it both at the college level and in the NBA (especially when Kevin Durant is playing). I’m an Economics and Finance major with a sequence in Data Science here at CMC. On campus, I’m involved in APAM and the president of the Alexander Hamilton Society; I’ve worked for the Keck Center as well. I care a lot that you feel included in the CMC community and hope that Valach feels like home to you.

What You Need to Know About the Soon-to-be-Launched Data Science Major

And I witnessed people from cultures across the globe who cmc markets review didn’t just coexist but thrived together. I do it because growing up in Hawai’i, I was surrounded by other people of color. Specifically, I’m interested in how, as FYCP, I can develop virtual events and represent our class’ needs with an eye towards sustainability, mental health, and inclusion. My campaign values are community and accountability. I’m from the Bay Area, but I’m itching to be on campus with you all in Claremont.

Introducing the 2025-26 RAs!

As of now, I spend my day (when I’m not doing work) cooking, making bracelets, listening to Philosophize This, and scrolling through TikTok (probably my favorite thing to do). The impacts of a pandemic turned our lives upside down and tragic events called for us to re-examine America as we know it. But I can promise that I can help lead that effort, day in and day out, to forge the kind of class WE want to see.

I also reposted something last Wednesday, “No matter who is president, Jesus is King.” 25 of my peers had unfollowed me by the next day. At CMC, I have felt empowered to embrace controversial opinions. CMC continually achieves a high free-speech ranking and promotes effective conversations through organizations like the Athenaeum, the Open Academy and the Dreier Roundtable. The CMC community must re-commit itself to constructive dialogue.

Class of 2024: First-Year Class President Candidate Statements

Indeed, in answering student questions, many of the professors noted that several of Trump’s policies will be influenced by the people he surrounds himself with in his cabinet and executive agencies. Many students and faculty expressed concern that U.S. alliances will increasingly depend on personal relations with Trump and what other countries can offer, rather than longer-term U.S. strategic considerations. “It’s not a ‘perhaps,’” they decisively rebutted, “America hates women so much, they’d rather have a rapist as the president than a woman of color.” A tense, uncomfortable silence fell over the class. I believe that Donald Trump lacks the character to be president and that his victory will severely harm America’s civic culture and international reputation. “The capstone is unique in the sense that it offers students a taste of working with an external client on a real-world program and soft skills, such as proper presentation, in addition to analysis skills,” said Batta in an exclusive interview with the Forum.

What You Need to Know About the Soon-to-be-Launched Data Science Major

I also hope to highlight the diversity that makes our class so great, by spotlighting groups like Mi Gente, BSU, SAGA, APAM and more! During high school, I was a basketball captain, principal string bassist in the orchestra, interned for my Congressman, and founded my school’s first Mental Health Awareness Club. Having graduated high school in China, I’m acutely aware of the importance of bridging cultural and social gaps, and existing alongside each other as full humans. CMC is a place where all of us should feel fully, genuinely and authentically at home.

Kristol, the son of famed conservative intellectual Irving Kristol, was born and raised in New York City. In an interview with The Forum on October 9th, Bill Kristol told Dhriti Jagadish and Shiv Parihar that he would vote for Zohran Mamdani if he were a resident of New York City. Even though we’re only one month into our virtual first semester, this class already means a lot to me. If there’s a class-wide event you want to see happen, I’ll make sure it happens. Outside of these random facts, why should you vote for me to be your first-year Class President? I haven’t declared a major yet but I am thinking of PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics), PPA (Philosophy and Public Affairs), International Relations or some combination of those subjects.

Looking ahead, the Office of Consortial Academic Collaboration is also planning to add a data science major at the other Claremont Colleges, according to Uvin. In terms of the differences between the data science major and sequence, Uvin believes that “the major is heavy on math, statistics, and probability. Due to increasing student demand and the use of data analysis in different fields, CMC plans to implement a new data science major by the fall of 2020 or 2021. Introducing the 2025-26 RAs!

Professor Jessica Zarkin, who teaches courses on Mexican and Latin American politics, noted that Trump would likely use the threat of tariffs as a bargaining chip with Mexico to ensure cooperation on stricter border policies. In a similar vein, Professor Jennifer Taw, Chair of the IR program, expressed concern that Trump—alongside Israel—may prosecute a war with Iran before Iran acquires nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Minxin Pei, Tom and Margot Pritzker ’72 Professor of Government and George R. Roberts Fellow, an expert on China, warned of rising Sino-American tension and the potential for a crisis over Taiwan under a Trump Administration that will pursue protectionist and hawkish policies. She argued that this approach is not new, but has been part of the politics of American foreign policy at various times in U.S. history. Members of CMC’s International Relations (IR) faculty delivered brief remarks on various policies and approaches that President-elect Donald Trump will pursue on the international stage once he takes office.

  • Just think for a second about how miraculous that is.
  • Moreover, many of the professors responded to student questions about whether Trump can or wants to achieve all of his stated goals.
  • I knew I wanted to attend CMC from the second I set foot on campus.
  • As the class gave their answers – economic malaise, Harris’s lack of time, Biden’s unpopularity – I noticed a group of classmates making incredulous, repulsed facial expressions whenever someone answered.

I’m excited to help cultivate a welcoming and engaging community within Fawcett and the CMC community at large. I have also retained my childhood love for books, so if you ever want to discuss your latest read or need a fun recommendation, let’s connect! On campus, I’m also a Head Consultant at the CWPD, so you’ll often find me studying/socializing in the writing center.
